Diesel, a Newfoundland dog was found abandoned in Suffolk with three of his siblings in an extremely poor state.  Diesel was covered in faeces indicating that the poor dog had been kept in such a restricted area that he couldn’t move freely.  The faeces were dried and hardened to such an extent that the dog had to be shaved to remove them on arrival at Pampered Pets of Hacheston, a local animal rescue centre.

Diesel was assessed as being around 9-10 months old and weighed a mere 34 kilos.  His condition on examination was found to be extremely poor, both physically and physiologically.

Ron and Margaret Parker who had recently lost their mastiff, adopted Diesel into a wonderful, loving and caring home.  At the age of 70, Ron and Margaret have put their efforts in rescuing this poor wretch of a dog, showing with care, love and a good diet, Diesel’s life could be saved and enhanced to the degree that today Diesel is a buoyant, healthy, muscular, shiny coated wonder of the Newfoundland breed.

After some weeks Diesel felt physiologically confident enough to bark and play within his role as an active member of the family as opposed to a quivering wreck.

From his rescue date of May 2007, Diesel was under the watchful eye of Lesley at Orwell Vets, Ipswich and later that year was given the all clear, weighing in at 50 kilo and with a height of 28” having gained approximately 2.6kg per month.  His muscle gain has been exceptional with steady and regular increases in weight of muscle.

Diesel’s diet has gone from scavenging food in the wild to a healthy, professionally formulated nutritional diet, where clearly all Diesel’s nutritional requirements for stabilisation and positive balanced growth from poor condition to present day have been successfully achieved by the use of Salters Energy food. Now this has been accomplished he is fed on Salters Maintenance to maintain the right nutritional balance for his life stage.

UPDATE!!!

Diesel now weighs in at a mighty 54kg and is “solid muscle” achieved with the owners help Mr & Mrs Parker and Lesley at Orwell Vets Ipswich.  He was fed solely on Salters Energy turning high quality nutrients into solid muscle at approximately 2.6 kg per month. He is now maintaining growth in adulthood with Salters Canine Maintenance.

Dear Stephen
We have recently been involved with helping rehoming of 8 GSD pups who had a terrible start. We got them all onto Salters puppy last sept and despite having rotten "elbow" joints, hips etc the Vets are keen to allow the good nutrition to carry on the good work rather than operate. Thought you would like to know that.
Here are some pics - a before and after - Woody is the pup with seriously fluffy ears!
Regards
Carol

KNOCKIES STAR (pet name LUCY)

Thank you for your time in speaking to me when I rang this afternoon.  I found it very helpful and will use the advice.

Born “Knockies Star” on 22nd April 2008, one of 7 - 4 girls, 3 boys - at Dillymore Kennels, Capel St. Mary, London Rd. (A12), Nr. Ipswich. Owned and trained by John G. & Deborah Mullins.
33 races, won 2, 2nd in 7.

Her sister - Knockies Hannah won TV Trophy at Sittingbourne last Wednesday (one of the biggest races of the year).
Paul and I adopted Knockies Star on the 8th January 2011, renamed her Lucy, and introduced her to Salters on the 12th.

On Easter Monday, 25th April, we attended the 'All About Dogs' show at the Suffolk Showground, Trinity Park, Ipswich.
When we arrived we went and saw Kevin and Sally Baalham who run the GreyhoundhomerSuffolk RGT where we got Lucy from. They tried to persuade me to enter her in the showing, I wanted none of it but was outnumbered and as I didn't have to do anything only be there with her and it was all for fun and fundraising for a good cause, I reluctantly decided I would do it.
Lucy came 1st!!!!! We then had to wait 1 1/2 hours for the final - she won Best in Show. We have never been so shocked and very proud of her.

The judge said - Judging at Trinity Park 25/4/11.
“The gorgeous 'Lucy' - Best in Show.  One of many lovely hounds, but something about her stole my heart!”

I enclose some photos of the day:

I have since received a 'phone call from Mr. Stephen Salter who has also given me some additional advice and thank you again for the support you offer to your customers.

Kind regards,
Jackie Leech

RARE BREED REVIVED BY SALTERS

TXURI” THE SPANISH PYRENEAN MASTIFF COMES TO MY HOME IN SUFFOLK

I first saw a Pyrenean Mastiff at an exhibition called ‘Discover Dogs’ – an event which is held at Olympia in November every year. I was stunned by the gentleness and beauty of such a huge breed and promised myself that one day....

When that day came, there were none left in the country so I bit the bullet and contacted the Spanish Pyrenean Mastiff Association in Madrid. They could not have been more helpful and I eventually found a litter of puppies in the Basque Country at the very North West of Spain. One Easy Jet trip later I found her. There were formalities about her importation due to rabies etc., these were fortunately undertaken by her breeder, a vet. This took forever and I eventually went down to fetch Txuri, a Basque name, pronounced Churri, when she was fifteen months old in October last year. Her breeder met me at the airport with a camper van and Txuri on the back seat. We drove through the night and eventually arrived at Calais at midday the next day and from there to Suffolk. It is a tribute to her self-control that during the journey she was neither sick nor difficult and, although obviously a bit bewildered, behaved with dignity and sweetness.

When she arrived she had a bit of a difficult time settling in – tummy trouble – we think due to the change in the water and/or environment, different people, different language! Her weight dropped quite a bit and in December she weighed 47 kilos which was too low for her size and breed. She was put on Salters Energy food and it was then cut gradually to Salters maintenance and she weighed in on May 31st at a splendid 54 kilos and you can see the magnificent dog she is now. She will be bred next year, all being well and I am sure Salters will see her through her pregnancy and she will duly have healthy puppies.
